Brown gets A+ in sixth
year of karting
WATERDOWN, ONTARIO – Tyler Brown has successfully completed his
sixth year of competitive karting. The 12-year-old from Waterdown,
Ontario had a season that would make most NASCAR drivers cringe
as he competed in a total of 37 race day events.
“I have learned a lot this year and it showed in my results later
in the year.” Brown said of his hectic season. “During the first
half of the season, my average qualifying position was ninth.
But during the second half I improved that average up to a third
place position.”
Qualifying is critical to a good finish in the tough junior classes
Brown runs in club and regional competitions. This boost in average
qualifying position also made him a threat to win on any weekend.
“My dad (crew chief) was hard on me at the start of the year.
He wanted me to stay more focused during qualifying – starting
ninth put me behind the 8-ball right away. Dad, ‘the guru’ was
right and once I realized that I had to qualify better, I kicked
it up a notch.”
With his qualifying problems sorted out, Brown was able to finish
the year with two pole positions, one win and amazing 19 top five
finishes in the 37 races. Having the speed to win is one thing,
having the consistency to finish is another. Brown didn’t make
the top ten in only three of the 37 events and went the entire
schedule without a DNF (Did not finish).
Brown’s work ethic also showed up in his 2003 results, where he
had a top five at the ASN Canadian Nationals, fourth in points
at Mosport Kart Club, fifth in points at Toronto Kart Club and
he ranked eighth in the Ontario KartSport Championship Series.
Brown has also been ‘schooled’ during 2003 about the level of
skill, commitment and dedication that it takes to consistently
run at the front. “I have to work on my physical strength as well
as mental strength to compete at that same level when I move up
next year – where I will run two classes. You have to be as strong,
if not stronger at the end of the year, this is when the championships
are on the line.”
With the 4B Racing team behind him, Brown is already working on
his 2004 plans, but he realizes that he has a lot of help, and
a good support network behind him. “Without the commitment from
my mom and dad, Assante, South Side Mens Shop of Hamilton, and
Arnold Engines, none of this would have been possible. A big thanks
to all of them.”
Brown’s schedule for next year will be equally hectic, especially
with double the number of races. He is actively looking for new
sponsors and is already looking further ahead to cars in the next
few years. “Hopefully next year will go as good as this one. Having
tasted the thrills of the Pro Challenge Series car, I really am
starting to work on getting to that series as soon as possible.”
