WATERDOWN, ONTARIO –One year after Tyler completed his full time
karting career, he returned to his roots for a race at Mosport.
With an off weekend for the Ontario Pro Challenge Series and the
itch to drive caused by recent rain outs, Tyler headed to the
historic Bowmanville track to compete in the highly competitive
Rotax Class during the Marigold Ford Classic this past weekend.
“I told my dad I wanted to do this race and he told me that I
had to get the kart ready and we would go”, Brown said. With a
few hours of work done, the 4B Racing team was on its way to Mosport.
Because the team was in the process of selling all its karting
equipment, they had no data acquisition system, spare parts or
tuning software. “I told Tyler that we could be competitive on
prior race notes and a strong positive attitude”, father and acting
crew chief Darrell Brown stated.
Right out of the trailer, Tyler was both fast and a little rusty!
But it would take very little time to get up to speed. By the
afternoon qualifying sessions, Tyler would put his mount on the
3rd row and wait for racing to resume the next day. During the
pre-final on Sunday morning, an erratic start would demote Brown
back to 9th, but after the 6 lap pre-final was complete, he had
driven up to a deserving 4th place. Lining up on the outside of
row 2 for the final, Brown would get a better start at the green
flag and settle into fourth position for most of the race. “I
could see I was catching the lead pack of three karts but I needed
help”, Tyler said. Help eventually arrived in the closing laps
as the front three started to dice it up, which would allow Tyler
to close the gap. Half a lap from the end, the front three karts
all made significant contact in the final high speed chicane,
which allowed Tyler to slip up to the second spot for the checkered.
The difference between 1st and 2nd place was .08 of a second!
After the race Brown had these final comments. “It was a lot of
fun to come out and race with all my friends again, and also prove
to everyone, including myself, that I can still turn both ways
and be competitive. Now it is time to change my focus back to
my Pro Challenge race at Sunset Speedway in Barrie this Labour
Day weekend. ”
